Not many authors write about family in the way Ayòbámi Adébáyò does: she portrays both the everyday tensions created by the pressure we receive from our families and the actions that reveal the deepest love and desire to care for others, the consequences of which can be disastrous.

A Spell of Good Things is a tale of modern Nigeria told from the perspective of two families. Despite the social and economical divide between them, both families are affected by political corruption, wealth and poverty, lack of public systems, abuse of power and familial expectations. Through Eniolá and Wúràolá, whose lives become fatally intertwined, Adébáyò weaves a story of the extremes we will go to in order to protect those we love and offer them the best in life. She shows us how, even when our intentions are pure, the consequences of our actions might not.
