Recently published by Daunt Books, Headshot is the story of eight young women competing in the 12th Annual Daughters of America Cup, a boxing tournament hosted at the run-down Bob’s Boxing Palace in Reno, Nevada. The opening chapters take the form of the head-to-head brackets between the competitors, in which Rita Bullwinkel elaborates on the backstories and wider narratives that each of the young women will navigate in the confines of the boxing ring, the tournament itself, and societal constraints influencing their lives. The writing probes and jabs at the pressures of elite sport and the transformation of girlhood to womanhood with efficient force.
