She's Always Hungry brings readers Eliza Clark at her best (and by that I mean at her most disturbing). This collection of short stories combines excellent storytelling with some of the author’s signature elements: the pushing of literary boundaries, a dark sense of humour, and characters and worlds that are as disgusting as they are fascinating.

While this is the best short story collection I have read in a long time, the stories where Clark’s abilities shine brightest are the ones in which she dabbles into sci-fi: “Hollow Bones”, “Extinction Event”, “The King” and the title story are true testaments to her abilities. In these she proves how much she can do in just a few pages: from the creation of new species to the construction of worlds that are layered and complex with atmospheres that immerse the reader.

Clark doesn’t just seek to impact her readers with the grotesque nature of her stories, however - every story in this collection engages with current concerns, ranging from eating disorders to the potential end of the world as we know it. As is common in her writing, the exploration of power structures and the politics of gender are at the centre of this collection, while she also pays attention to how these relate to desire.

She's Always Hungry confirms Eliza Clark’s voice as one of the most distinctive among the authors writing today. She is sharp and unflinching and everything she writes is suitably weird.
